When someone mentions cyber-attacks, outside threats usually come to mind. From foreign nations, terrorists or criminal organizations for example. Inside dangers are often less visible. The Netherlands Court of Audit recently sounded the alarm about the poor security of critical waterworks and encouraged better screening of employees in key positions.

Marcel Jutte, managing director of Hudson Cybertec, is not surprised by the report of the Netherlands Court of Audit. “We pointed this out years ago that something needs to be done to increase cyber resilience in the water sector. In the field of cyber security, people are often the weakest link. Screening employees is a good start, but more is certainly needed.
